Physical Activity and Exercise
It is important for you to remain engaged socially, physically and emotionally in the
daily activities of family life, as you learn to live with your disease. When your blood
counts are low, some of this activity may be taxing, and there is no reason for you to
force yourself into over-exertion.
The appropriate level of exercise varies widely between individuals. Seek your doctor's
advice about a healthy exercise program that is suited to your individual needs given your
blood picture. You will be advised to limit your physical activities if the hemoglobin or
platelet counts are especially low. After a transfusion, you may resume a program of daily
exercise that you have developed with the help of your physician or knowledgeable personal trainer.
Complementary Therapies Program
At SVCCC, we believe that aligning your spiritual and emotional needs with your medical
treatment can help improve your outcome and quality of life. The Complementary Therapies
Program embodies this philosophy, offering therapies that help heal the whole person-mind,
body and spirit. Our experienced professionals will help you access therapies such as yoga,
massage, acupuncture, Reiki, therapeutic touch and Qi Gong. These are not alternative treatments
to your medical care; rather, they are therapies used in combination with traditional treatments
to provide you with a well-rounded approach to care.
